Managing Health Conditions & Chronic Pain
Do you feel that your symptoms are overwhelming?
Living with a long-term health condition or chronic pain is extremely challenging. There is unlikely to be a single day when you are not aware of your health being compromised in some way. It can get to the point where it is all that you think about, making it harder and harder to feel enthusiastic about life. It might also cause you to withdraw into yourself, doing less of the activities that you once enjoyed.
It is very likely that you will be taking medication to help manage your symptoms. However, the medication itself might be causing side effects that are themselves troublesome. In addition to which, the medication for your primary symptoms may not be as effective as you might have hoped. Suffice it to say that you might have discovered that medication alone is not enough to maintain a reasonable quality of life.
That’s where hypnotherapy can offer additional support. Relying solely on techniques that are entirely natural, there are no side effects to worry about. It could help to reduce some of your physical symptoms and also improve your psychological and emotional state. Overall, you might find that your quality of life is significantly improved.
How is your health condition affecting you?
- Severe, frequent pain
- Insomnia or poor quality sleep
- Isolating yourself from friends and not going out
- Unable to do as much as you used to
- Everything takes much longer and is uncomfortable
- Feeling low, tearful or depressed
- Feeling you can’t cope anymore
- Nausea, upset stomach or irritable bowel
- Unable to think about anything else
- You often think to yourself: “Why me?”
How can hypnotherapy help me?
Hypnotherapy targets a part of the brain that we call the primitive or subconscious mind. This is the part that generates all the negative states of thinking: anxiety, stress, low mood, frustration and so on. It is also important in terms of how we perceive pain.
By counteracting the negative influence of the primitive brain, hypnotherapy enables you to focus more constructively on how you would like your life to be, and helps you to put your energy into achieving more. By reducing the flow of adrenaline and cortisol (the stress hormone), it can also help to reduce your perception of pain and help to reduce inflammation within the body. This can help reduce the intensity and frequency of many different physical symptoms.
Hypnotherapy also helps you to feel more confident and in control. You can move from feeling powerless over your health condition to feeling increasingly confident about what you can do, and being able to enjoy life again.

Rebecca turned to Hypnotherapy when she was in pain
At the start of 2014, I began to feel excruciating pain in my back. Having experienced significant back problems from the age of 17, I thought this would pass after a few weeks with the help of an osteopath and physiotherapy. This time it was different. The pain continued month after month, and it was so severe I could barely move from my bed.
This came at the worst time for me professionally. I was wanting to move from my home in Herefordshire to Cornwall, to take up an exciting legal opportunity.
My mood plummeted and I was in real despair. I didn’t know what to do or who to turn to. I decided to go and see a hypnotherapist. That started a process which changed my mindset, my career path and is the reason I am a hypnotherapist today.
