Why does confidence matter?
Self-confidence is the key to everything we do in life. Without it, you may find that parts of your life become difficult or overwhelming. Perhaps you start doubting yourself to the point where you struggle to make even simple decisions. Or you constantly think that you aren’t “good enough”: at work, in social situations, giving presentations, or at your chosen hobby. It can prevent you from being the person that you really want to be, and can hold you back from being successful in your career, personal life or sporting activity. At its worst, it can result in profound unhappiness which causes you to lose perspective and succumb to feelings of hopelessness.
How is low self-confidence affecting you?
- You need constant reassurance from your partner, family or friends
- You are frequently putting yourself down and downplaying your achievements
- It is causing problems in your personal and professional relationships
- It is getting in the way of promotion and career advancement
- You feel that your public speaking is poor and you find giving presentations terrifying
- You are avoiding social situations because you feel inferior and overwhelmed
- Decision-making is becoming increasingly difficult and slow
- You don't try at something because you think you are bound to fail or mess up
Where does low self-confidence and self-esteem come from?
When we are operating from the rational part of the brain, we believe in ourselves and we are able to cope well with difficulties and challenges. But if, for any reason, our stress and anxiety levels rise, this can result in the primitive brain becoming more dominant than the rational brain. Then we become more susceptible to self-doubt and the “inner critic” that tells us that we simply aren’t “good enough”. The more we criticise ourselves, the lower our confidence sinks. This makes it harder to move forward and improve our situation. it affects our motivation to work on developing ourselves and our skills, which in turn causes us to feel miserable and unworthy.
How can hypnotherapy help improve your confidence?
Hypnotherapy targets the primitive part of the brain, which is where the lack of self-confidence and low self-esteem originate. Through relaxation and visualisation techniques, hypnotherapy reassures the primitive brain that the negative view of yourself is an unhelpful and unnecessary distortion. As the anxiety levels are encouraged to fall, so the opinion you have of yourself starts to change for the better.
Getting you to focus on and remember all the things that you have already successfully achieved in your life is an important part of this process. From this starting point, hypnotherapy can then help you to work out how best to tackle the areas that might need more effort, time and energy. But rather than facing this reality feeling overwhelmed and despairing, you are now in a position to address these challenges with enthusiasm and optimism The toxic “inner critic” can finally be silenced, allowing you to believe in yourself and your abilities once more.
