There is no magic or secret about the key to achieving weight loss and maintaining a healthy weight. We have to make sensible food choices in reasonable portion sizes and take regular physical exercise. There is no escaping the reality of this obvious truth, and there is no quick fix that can get us there. It takes time, effort and consistency.
Of course, one of the difficulties we face is that food is everywhere. After all, we have to eat to live. But it’s not just the food we have at home in the cupboards – it’s the food that colleagues bring into work to share, the meals out we have with friends and family, and the get togethers that always seem to involve food and drink. There is simply way too much of it, and it’s often the very worst sorts of food that are freely available, laden with fat and sugar.
Then there is the issue of how we are feeling. We feel down, so we eat. We feel stressed, so we eat. We feel bored, so we eat some more. Before we know it, we are seemingly trapped in a negative cycle of eating more and more food, and doing less and less to shift the extra calories. Then we look at ourselves in the mirror, and we are ashamed about what we see. It can make some of us very unhappy.
The clinical hypnotherapy I offer to clients seeking to lose weight is not about waving a magic wand. It is a process that seeks to tackle all aspects of your lifestyle and encourages you to make sustainable changes.
Each session is in two parts. The first part will be a discussion with you about your lifestyle, eating habits and physical activity. I will help you identify all the difficult areas, and agree concrete steps you can comfortably take to work towards a healthier lifestyle. Each week these steps will be reviewed and redefined.
The second part of the session involves using relaxation and visualisation techniques to tackle underlying issues – such as lack of motivation, low mood or high levels of stress. All of these factors compromise our ability to stay in intellectual control. If we are not in control, our good intentions go out of the window. We need to feel calm, relaxed and confident about life if we are to make good decisions on a daily basis. Decisions about food, exercise and everything else we want to do. Because issues around our weight do not appear overnight, neither do they disappear overnight.
I am focused on helping you make sustainable changes, and this takes time. Typically, I might see you for between 8 to 12 sessions, spread out over a number of months. It is always sensible to start the process by attending sessions on a weekly basis, to really kickstart motivation and focus. Ultimately, clinical hypnotherapy is a collaborative process. You have to make the changes, and keep up the good work. But it offers an approach which makes change a lot easier, and it gives you the tools not just to create a new body image, but to create a new you!
